The Issue
New Jersey group homes are a $1.5 billion tax-payer funded industry tasked with caring for our most vulnerable population, but inadequate laws are costing lives and wasting money.
There are 120 unexpected deaths in NJ group homes each year — and thousands of instances of abuse and neglect. Adequate investigations are rare, and consequences for those at fault almost non-existent.*
Accused group home operators investigate themselves because it provides them with a “great learning opportunity.” **
Some group home operators are paid as much as $1,200 per day per resident, but spend only pennies on the dollar on actual care in order to fund multi-million dollar paychecks for their CEOs.*
Critical medications are mismanaged, not administered, or worse yet stolen and sold on the street. Staff is too often untrained, unsupervised, and underpaid leading to jobs left unfilled.*
There are many high quality responsible providers and caregivers in NJ, but the “bad apples” in the bunch need to be stopped.

Paul Aronsohn
N.J. Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and their Families:
“We must end abuse and neglect in State-licensed residences. That means better staffing. That means better, more independent investigations. And that means more accountability from our State government as well as the provider agencies paid millions of taxpayer dollars. Fortunately, Assemblyman Sauickie and other Legislators have introduced legislation that moves us in that direction in big, important ways.”
Our Petition:
I want to help protect the lives of New Jersey’s most vulnerable — and help assure tax-payer funds are being spent wisely.
Note: New bill numbers may may be assigned new session of legislature
